mirror man

This hair-drying contraption is in the window of a hairdressers in Wales. Don’t worry.  They don’t use these head-frying things any more. It’s a retro window to make you smile… and be grateful that things have moved on since then.

What would Julia Gillard’s hairdresser partner make of it, I wonder?  I know what I made of her speech taking on Mr Misogyny in the Australian parliament. Wonderful. And to Tony Abbott, go take a hike (don’t forget your mirror).

A pyramid of highlights

Seated in an alcove of a hairdressing salon that opened out onto the street, she presented too good a photo opportunity to ignore. I felt guilty taking the shot. Of course, I did. But, that’s the dilemma that street or documentary photographers face. I try always to veer on the side of respecting my subjects. I wouldn’t say the lady was happy with my intrusion, but all I can say is sorry. And, hooray because it’s a photo that pleases my sense of the absurd.
